Kara Miller is a dance filmmaker and choreographer. She is a Ph.D. candidate in Performance Studies at U.C. Davis and a Jacob K. Javits Fellow. Her research focuses on dance film, embodied ecology, and movement practices from South Asia.
A dance graduate of the Juilliard School, she has performed the works of Martha Graham, Erick Hawkins, Paul Taylor, Jose Limon, and Doris Humphrey. While in NYC she served as the Artistic Director of the Omega Dance Company at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine presenting annual seasons and commissioned dances across the country including Cathedral events for PBS broadcast.
Kara currently resides in San Diego and has taught as a lecturer at U.C. Irvine, Cal State San Marcos, and Mira Costa College. She has recently created video in China, Turkey, Mexico, Prague, Canada, Sri Lanka, and the U.S. including the video projections for new dance and theater works choreographed by Donald McKayle, Loretta Livingston, Dave Massey, Vindhya Warakagoda, and Minerva Tapia, as well as video projects with Lisa Naugle, John Crawford, Kristen Smiarowski, and The Wooden Floor. She has worked professionally in broadcast television and film on E!’s Clean House and the feature Stepmom. Kara is a co-curator of the annual San Diego/Tijuana DANCEonFILM Festival.
